Where can I get hold of vegetable oil?
Fuel supply for any 'alternative' powered vehicle is always going to be
a primary consideration in deciding to convert or not. Just as the LPG industry suffered from
a lack of infrastructure & supply in its early days, so too does the emerging
biofuels industry.
However, until veg oil becomes more widely available, the easiest place is likely to be your local
supermarket. Own brand oil offers the best economic source for the
general public. If you have access to a wholesale store, then you'll
have access to 20 litre catering drums. However there often doesn't seem to be an
appreciable saving over buying small containers from a supermarket.
If you don't mind investing a bit of your spare time and have the space
available, then filtering waste oil will give you the lowest cost fuel - but this should only be considered for older, non-common rail engines. Your local take away will more than likely be happy to give you oil that they would otherwise have to pay to have collected. A word of advice:
if you intend to collect used oil from an outlet be regular and
reliable. If you want the outlet to put aside their waste oil for you,
always collect on the agreed date and time. Failure to do so could
cause the outlet trouble; old food oil standing around doesn't get
looked on very favourably by a Health Inspector.
