Will I invalidate my vehicle warranty?
A manufacturer's engine warranty typically covers the first 3 years of engine operation. No vehicle manufacture will currently honour any claim for engine damage if the vehicle has been operated on an unrecognised fuel, i.e. a fuel that fails to carry a government fuel standard. In the UK, all pump diesel sold for road use must conform to BS EN 590:2004. As we don’t yet have an agreed standard for vegetable as a fuel, it is of little surprise that an engine warranty is void: if the warranty provider doesn’t know what you’re putting in your engine how can they insure it against damage? That said, things are moving forward: in Germany, the RK-Weihenstephan standard for rapeseed as a fuel has been established, but isn’t yet widely recognised.
